Just saw this article via a Facebook friend: “UN passes historic resolution calling for universal rights for LGBTQ persons” posted on the LGBTQNation website.
It’s a very interesting article. The UN Human Rights Council passed this resolution today stating that gay rights are human rights, and as such are protected. To quote from the article:
The resolution, which passed 23-19 with three member state’s abstentions, calls for recognition that “affirms that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights and that everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms … without distinction of any kind.”
The resolution was proposed by South Africa, and the South African delegation is quoted with their reasons for the proposal, which is an interesting read. Most people know that by and large, LGBTQ people aren’t exactly welcomed with open arms in most African countries, so for South Africa to propose something like this seems like a huge step forward.
It’s a shorter article, but well worth a read.
